A Time for Reflection

This month has been a time of reflection for me.  I wanted to take a step back and really examine my life.  I needed to see what’s important to me and where I need to prioritize.  It’s been a fiercely busy year.  Our family moved across the country, my husband started a new job, I began blogging in addition to styling and I turned 40.  After some prayer and reflection, this is what I’ve come up with:

I’m first and foremost a child of God.  I am a born again Christian who loves Jesus and I try to reflect that in my life in how I treat and love others whether they agree with me or not.  Second, I’m a wife to the most loving and caring individual a girl could be lucky enough to know let alone call her husband.  He is my partner, rock and support of which this crazy life I lead would NEVER happen without.  He’s the funniest person I’ve ever met (many would agree with me) and bonus: he’s also pretty cute.  Third, I’m a mother to the three most beautiful creations on this Earth.  (I may be a little biased…but I’m allowed that).  Being a mother is simultaneously in one breath both exhausting and the most rewarding thing a person could experience.  There is no fashion show I’ve ever worked on, photo shoot I’ve styled nor any outfit I’ve ever put together that could come close to comparing with the feeling of pride, heartache and love these three little miracles give me. Long after the lights from a show are dimmed or the last piece from a shoot returned they will be my footprint on this world.  They…not a pretty dress, fashion event or experience are my legacy.

Finally, in addition to blogging, I’m also a stylist.  It’s often been said, “Love what you do and you’ll never work a day in your life.”  I’ve been lucky enough to experience that.  It’s a crazy life where you never know what you’ll be doing from one job to the next, who you’ll be working with or if you’ll even have a job the next day.  You may be in one city in the morning and catching a plane to your next job that night. You can be dressing a show backstage at Chanel for Karl Lagerfeld one minute or running up a fire escape with a dress the next (true stories). But I want to highlight a fashion crew that is near and dear to my heart.  They are each extremely talented and gifted and serve as members of a full working body.  We laugh (a lot), cry and fight.  We’re up until all hours of the night and morning together, dehydrated and exhausted and still manage to come out in the end still hugging.  We can go months in between jobs without seeing each other and yet pick up right where we left off….because it’s like coming home.  We’re more than just a fabulous fashion event crew.

We are a family.

I hope whatever you do this year you have time in the holiday hubbub to stop and reflect.  Ask yourself why you do what you do and what’s important to you.  I’d love to hear how you keep things in perspective.  It’s easy to get swept away in the current and noise of life.  How do you stay grounded?
